Parents and players:
Are you struggling to set realistic expectations for yourself or your child as a student-athlete? Do you often wonder if your student-athlete is behind? Are you stressed or concerned that they aren’t “good enough”?
Educational and athletic development is a multi-stage pathway from infancy to adulthood. Therefore parents, and youth should understand that growth as a student-athlete may look differently at certain stages of life. Use the HSAD model to help guide you in setting realistic goals/expectations for your student-athlete as they mature.
The MADE 5 STAGES of HSAD are listed below:
Introductory: Typically ages 7-10. At this stage, student-athletes are developing their sense of awareness and should see themselves as capable to maintain healthy development. Training at this stage is to introduce foundational student-athletic skills in a manner that is fun.
Fundamental: Typically ages 10-12. At this stage, student-athletes might have an interest in sports and education, but still need basic skill development. Training at this stage is to develop fundamental skill literacy in all aspects of HSAD, while continuing to make participation enjoyable.
Investment: Typically ages 12-14. At this stage, student-athletes might recognize the importance of training and see it as valuable to their own success. Training at this stage is to reach fundamental fluency in all aspects of HSAD, while introducing more field-specific concepts and training.
Specialization: Typically ages 14-16. At this stage, student-athletes start to specialize in their specific field of choice and make choices to achieve their goals. Training at this stage is to develop field-specific abilities in order to enhance overall performance.
Commitment: Typically ages 16-18. At this stage, student athletes are preparing for a collegiate-athletic career. Training at this stage is to further enhance specific skills and abilities while performing at a high-level in all realms of HSAD
