Reasons To Do Community Service As A Student-Athlete

Stand Out To College Coaches

Adding community service activities to your resume can help you stand out as a student-athlete to college coaches. At the collegiate level many sport programs require their athletes to participate in some form of community service. According to NCAA.org 50% of student-athletes report that they are required to take part in community service as part of their athletics participation. Adding a community service experience to your resume’ can show recruiters that you are able to handle the demands of being a student-athlete on and off the court.

Stand Out To College Admissions

Colleges consider numerous factors when assessing applications, including the ways in which students give back to their community. In one survey of college admissions officers, 58 percent of respondents said community service positively impacted a student’s chance of being accepted.

Scholarship Opportunities

In addition to making students more attractive candidates for scholarships in general, community service unlocks unique scholarship opportunities in other ways as well.

For instance, there are numerous scholarships specifically for students who are actively involved in their community, including the Equitable Excellence Scholarship and the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. Depending on where the student volunteers, some nonprofit organizations even have internal scholarships reserved for their volunteers.

Gain Valuable Life Lessons

Arguably the biggest benefit of volunteering for any young person is the life changing character values, knowledge, and skills they can pick up through the experience. According to researchers, volunteering can lead to an overall healthier and happier life and help students gain important life skills like social awareness, self confidence, responsibility, connectivity, career skills, and more. All white making a positive impact in the lives of others.
